When Life Leaves You Empty

What is your response when you feel worthless? How do you react when it feels like life has only negativity and ruin to offer? Where does your mind go when you feel alone and invisible to everyone around you?

There are moments in life when these questions can overwhelm our senses. We may not voice them out loud, but in the silence of the moment, often when our head hits the pillow at night, we ponder these things.

For me, one of these moments was several years ago when my wife and I lost our first baby early in my wife’s pregnancy. It was a moment I will never forget as we were met with the frailty of life. The feeling of walking out the doctor’s office doors feeling at a loss for words and feeling that we were very small. Thoughts flooded my mind, from frustration to sadness. I felt frustrated that this happened to us. Sad, because we would never get to see the face of our unborn child on this side of heaven. The hurt was deep, and the loneliness I felt was thick.

Some moments can make us feel that God is a million miles away and that He doesn’t genuinely care about what we are going through at the moment. In our Bible knowledge, we can claim that God knows our future and that all things will work together and that He will receive the most glory out of even the most difficult circumstances, but this is not always easy to believe. However, as I have reflected on a passage of Scripture today, I am reminded of just how personally He knows each of us and how much He does care about every circumstance that this life will bring, good or bad.

Be encouraged that God knows us personally!

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me!”

“You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.”

Psalm 139:1-2

God has prepared our path, and He is with us!

“You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.”

“You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.”

Psalm 139:3, 5

God intricately made us into who we are!

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.”

“My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me,when as yet there was none of them.”

Psalm 139:13, 15-16

God is worthy to follow!

“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!”

Psalm 139:23-24

So what is our response when we feel worthless, overwhelmed, and lonely? It should be to lean into the One who created us, who knows our path, and knows us better than we know ourselves. Our souls already know of this bond; a bond only found in a Father’s love for His children.

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”

Psalm 139:14
